If you are physically fit, have an adventurous personality, and would like to expand upon your basic alpine skills, then the Chulu East Peak climb is for you. Although Chulu East is considered to be non-technical peak, it is recommended that you have at least basic mountaineering experience and are familiar with the use of harnesses, crampons, ice axes, climbing ropes, and tying knots before you embark on this expedition This trek includes crossing a glacier and making a steep ascent to the summit. In addition, you will also be roped to other climber or guide during this climb.

From the summit of Chulu East, which rests high above the Manang Valley, you will be able to experience beautiful panoramic views of Gangapurna, Dhaulagiri, Glacier Dome, Manaslu, and Tilicho Peak; these are just some of the majestic peaks that your delighted eyes will gaze upon.

The route to Chulu East Peak Base Camp begins at Besi Sahar; just like the Annapurna Circuit Trail. You will then follow the Marysyangdi river valley where you will get a chance to enjoy the culture of the Sherpa people and the beautiful landscape of the Himalayas. After crossing pine and rhododendron forests, you will arrive at the upper valley; the home of the warm and welcoming Manangba people.

When we reach Pisang, we will veer off the Annapurna Circuit Trail and venture into an uninhabited region. To get through this area, we will follow a ridge that leads through yak pastures, pine forests and Mani walls; this portion of the trail will take us towards the Chulu East Base Camp. We will spend two days here to allow you to acclimatize to the region as well as to provide the Sherpa team with enough time to prepare the high camp.

From high camp, we will trek through steep, rough moraine and soft snow that will take us to a broad glaciated ridge, where we descend onto and cross a broken glacier. Once we have made it across the glacier, we will steep scree slopes to get to the comparatively straightforward, albeit very steep, Chulu East peak where we will be greeted with magnificent views of the surrounding area.

Meals

Full board on trek, breakfast in Kathmandu and Pokhara

The food on trek is simple, varied but trust us, very tasty. It does get more basic the higher you go as fewer ingredients become available. We let our trekkers choose whatever they want from the menu. Continental breakfast in the cities.

As we do camping, our trained cook set the menu and prepare meals himself so that you will not have to cook on any of our tours.

Accommodation

One of the most essential components of a great holiday is accommodation. At FrozenGround, we make it a top priority to use quality and character accommodation whenever it is possible. Accommodation can vary by destination and the types of holidays.

Teahouse

We are using the same family run teahouses for years which are very atmospheric and friendly. Since these are rather far away from the nearest road, it’s not all that surprising that teahouses only offer basic, but clean necessities and amenities, especially since things can only be carried up by porters or even animals. These kinds of lodges also contain dining areas that are heated and attractively decorated. The bedrooms of these lodges contain wooden beds with foam mattresses and are unheated, so you will need a sleeping bag. The lodges also contain shared bathroom and washing facilities, which are sometimes located near the main lodge in a separate building. It’s also important to further note that some of these lodges use continental-style toilets, which will require self-flushing by using water buckets. For additional charges, you may also opt to use a lodge with battery charging facilities and heated showers. While staying at these lodges is a good way to meet fellow hikers and campers, keep in mind that they are still located in a remote enough area to cause facilities to be very basic.

Tent

This trip includes accommodation in tent, for which we will provide the necessary equipment’s, such as two-person tents with mat. However, you will need to bring your own sleeping bag.

No matter what areas we travel in, we always do our best to ensure accommodation that best reflects those specific areas. When hotels are involved, we always aim for requirements such as cleanliness, safety, location, and, of course, comfort. We have a wide range of hotels in Kathmandu from 2 stars to 5 stars. Single supplement

Our holidays are operated on a twin-share basis. That means that cost is based on either sharing the accommodation with other member of the group of same sex or people who book together. However single supplement and private trip are available. Please note that in some remote areas single supplement is not available. Please contact us for further details.

General Info

Equipment

The following is fairly exhaustive list of what you should pack for the trip: trekking trousers, waterproof and windproof over trousers/rain pants, thermal base layer shirts, casual shirt and/or T-shirts, fleece jacket, waterproof and windproof jacket, warm jacket (down), sunhat, warm hat, sunglasses, warm gloves or mittens, head torch with spare batteries, sun protector, toiletries, antibacterial hand wash, small towel, shampoo.

Comfortable high altitude tents of good quality standards with foam mats, ice axe, rope, carbine and harness are provided. Palatable dishes are also provided by trained cooks while climbing. You should also bring your sleeping bags – which should be 4-season bags as the temperature will decrease especially at 4,000 m – as well as climbing boots and crampons.

You will need sleeping bag which is available to hire in Kathmandu as well as trekking and climbing equipment.

Trekking pole is not essential, but can be useful on the challenging ascent and descent. Good pair of boots are one of the most important on the gear list. You need to make sure that your boots are braked in before trek.

What you Carry

While you are trekking you only have to carry a backpack with water, snacks, extra socks, waterproof light jacket and your camera. It is possible to store you travel luggage at the hotel in Kathmandu and transfer all you need for trekking into a specially made FrozenGround travel bag. This must be maximum 15 kg which will be moved by our porter team.

First Aid

A medical kit will accompany each group. You should also bring your own personal first aid kit, which should include the following: broad spectrum antibiotic, antiseptic cream, throat lozenges, Diamox (altitude), diarrhoea treatment (Imodium) painkillers, plasters and blister treatment, Insect repellent (DEET), and re-hydration salts (Dioralyte).

Visa and Vaccination

You can get a tourist visa upon arrival at the airport in Kathmandu. You must fill in an application form and provide a passport photograph at the customs. Nepal entry Visa fee US$ 40 for 30 days and US$ 25 for 15 days.

There are no mandatory vaccination requirements. However, our recommended vaccinations are the following: Polio, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Typhoid, Hepatitis A. Malaria is a risk factor in Nepal. There is yearlong risk in the Terrai region bordering India, including the Royal Chitwan National Park. No risk exists in Kathmandu or typical highland treks. Malaria prevention options should be discussed with a travel medicine specialist prior to departure.

Altitude

Most of our trips to Himalaya go to high altitudes where there is a risk of being affected by Acute Mountain Sickness. Our itineraries are designed for good acclimatisation as we are following the “climb high, sleep low” rule. It is important that you familiarise yourself with the signs and symptoms of altitude sickness and that you report any illness to your guide immediately. However, you don’t need to scare of travelling to high altitudes if you are following the simple rules and procedure of preventing altitude sickness.

Weather

In Nepal, the monsoon rains begin to dissipate in early September so our trekking season lasts from the middle of September to May. The weather, from mid-October to December, is usually stable with clear views, mild to warm days, and cold nights. In October, and in low altitudes, daytime temperatures have been known to reach 30 degrees Celsius. Nights, on the other hand, may drop to less than 0 degrees Celsius at the higher altitudes.

When you go trekking in Nepal, from December to February, you can expect cool to mild days with clear skies, and very cold nights. At low altitudes, daytime temperatures are typically mild i.e. about 20 degrees Celsius. At nights this temperature can fall to -10 degrees Celsius, especially at the higher altitudes. Also, it is important to note that, sometimes winter storms can bring snow to depths as low as 2500 meters.

The dry winter season starts to transition into spring time conditions in March. During this time, you can expect clear mornings with afternoon showers every now and again. The daytime temperature increase in March happens quickly, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius. You can expect mild nights at the lower altitudes. The increased rainfall on the hills is outshined by the amazing displays of a wild variety of wildflowers during this time of year.

In May, conditions are typically hot at the low elevations and rainstorms during the afternoon are common. This period generally has clear weather at the higher altitudes and is the perfect time for mountaineering expeditions to begin their ascents.

The rainy season in Nepal lasts from the middle of June to the middle of September. Thus, it’s not suitable to go trekking in the Nepal Himalaya during this time. But, there are a few remote valleys that are exempt from this rule.

If you go on a lower altitude trek in Nepal, it’s important to note that the weather patterns aren’t always predictable. In other words, there’s no guarantee that conditions will be optimal for a trek. But, there are well established patterns that make it highly likely that you will experience great weather. In this way, you can fully experience the village culture, forests, and excellent mountain views on your journey. You are expected to experience mild weather conditions through the trek season.

If you go on a moderate altitude trek in Nepal, similarly, to lower altitude treks, the weather patterns here are not always predictable. Generally, you can expect to experience mostly mild weather but the high camps may face harsh weather and snowfalls, especially in the winter.

Our climbing expeditions are held during the pre and post monsoon periods. This is because the snow conditions, temperatures, and weather during these times are more stable. This stability promises optimal conditions for a safe and successful trek.

After the Monsoon

The rains of the monsoon begin to dissipate during the first weeks of September. From mid-October to mid-December the weather is generally stable with mild to warm days, clear views, and cold nights. You can expect daytime temperatures to reach anywhere from 30 degrees Celsius at the lower altitudes but this will decrease as you move into the higher areas.

When you reach heights over 3000 meters, the daytime temperatures can reach 20 degrees Celsius. The temperature is dependent on whether the days are windy, sunny, etc. During the night, the temperatures don’t typically dip that much in the lower altitudes. But, as you approach November, the days get shorter and colder. In the higher altitudes, the temperatures can dip sharply at night, even as cold as 15 degrees when you camp on the snow or ice.

Before the Monsoon

In March, the dry winter begins to make way for wetter and warmer conditions. You can expect to wake up to clear mornings but there will also be the occasional cloud buildup that signals the coming of an afternoon rainstorm. Also, sometimes in the middle of the day and the afternoon, it can be hard to see the mountains clearly.

Daytime temperatures increase rapidly in March and you can expect to see temperatures as high as 30 degrees Celsius and mild nights. At the higher altitudes, the conditions are similar to those during the post-monsoon period, with the exception of there being more snow. You can also expect to see beautiful displays of wildflowers during this time of the year. During the months of April and May, temperatures are usually hot at the lower altitudes, but daily afternoon rainstorms are common.

Preparing Yourself Physically

Being properly physically prepared for trekking and its serious physical challenges is very important. First, assessing your own individual physical condition and training accordingly is a significant must. Basically, handling a rigorous trek will be much easier the more fit you are at the onset. For a training program that is well-rounded, be sure to include aerobic cross-fit training, hiking (at high altitudes if possible) and strength training.

Preparing Yourself Mentally

Making the hardest portions of your trek achievable could simply come down to mental stamina. Many trekkers tend to make the mistake of overlooking their mental preparation. Keeping a positive mind-set and never ignoring your body’s signals are significant considerations on your trek.
